Although the plane has the last name WELDEN on it, FOOTNOTE has the original caption from the back of the photo that says this is 2nd Lt. Thomas Whelan and his crew chief MILLER. I wonder if this IS really WELDEN....
Yes, this is Thomas Whelan, my grandfather. I do not know why he was using Welden's plane at this point. However, I do know that his plane had been damaged in a crash.

I just found this annotation on FOOTNOTE:
LT Thomas F. Whelan of the 356th Ftr Sq, 354th FG flying P-51B 43-12172 "Mackie The 3rd," borrowed from ace LT Robert D. Welden.
